Explanation

This is an acute inflammatory process involving vaginal mucosa (lining tissue) and is usually caused by bacterial or yeast infection or by local irritation from caustic douches.

Considerations

Vaginitis is common in women with diabetes. There is itching and burning with some edema and usually an abnormal whitish or yellowish discharge. Low Estrogen levels reduce local tissue resistance and allow for irritations. Use of oral contraceptives and broad-spectrum antibiotics may be basic etiological factors.

Treatment

The B-complex vitamins are probably the most important factors in treating this condition. Niacin deficiency interferes with normal functioning of the intestinal tract, reduces HCI output, hinders absorption of calcium and iron, and leads to anemia. Eventually, there is inflammation of the intestinal tract with itching and burning around the anus and vagina.
