Explanation
This is an Arteriole spasm particularly of the fingers and toes and occasionally other dependent parts as the nose and tongue. The skin of the digits becomes tense and shiny and often develops painful ulcers on the tips.
Considerations
Blanching and cyanosis of the digits may occur, usually in response to exposure to cold or emotional upsets. Triphasic color changes are common with pallor, cyanosis and then redness due to reactive hyperemia. Normal color and sensation are restored by warming the hands or feet.
Treatment
Recognition and treatment of the underlying disturbance is the first order of preference in coming to grips with this condition. Even those cases with fixed arterial occlusion will respond to drug therapy.
