Explanation
About half of all women experience PMS (Premenstrual Tension) at some time. Fluctuations in the circulating level of hormones (especially estrogen and progesterone) cause retention of sodium in the blood stream, resulting in water retention in body tissues.
Considerations
The parts of the body usually involved include the gastrointestinal system, central nervous system, the skin, reproductive system, and breasts. Symptoms usually begin about 7 to 14 days prior to a menstrual period and usually stop when menstruation (period) begins. Signs and symptoms include 1) nervousness & irritability, 2) Dizziness or fainting. 3) Emotional instability. 4) Increased or decreased sex drive. 5) Headaches. 6) Tender, swollen breasts. 7) Bloating, constipation, diarrhea or other digestive disturbances. 8) Fluid retention that causes puffiness in the ankles, hands and face. 9) Higher incidence of minor infections such as colds. 10) Acne outbreaks. 11) Decreased urination.
