Explanation

Nursing (lactation) is a perfectly normal and preferred feeding method for newborns to age 2 or when mother or infant can agree on discontinuance. Not only is it healthy for the baby, but it provides a definite bonding opportunity and promotes immunity from many infant diseases. Eating properly is important to the health of the mother and the baby. The mother should be aware that anything she eats will be fed to the baby through her milk. Should infection occur during the nursing process it should be treated immediately. (see MASTITIS)
