Explanation
Headaches are a diffuse pain that may occur in any portion of the head without reference to nerve distribution. Headaches may be acute or chronic. They may be intermittent, throbbing or a bursting pressure-type pain. Two common varieties are tension headaches and migraine. Allergic sinus headaches are also common.
Considerations
Acute headaches that come and go may be due to a variety of factors including disease conditions of the eye, ear, nose, or throat; or they may be due to traumatic involvements of the head and neck. Almost any disturbance of body function may cause headache. Chronic headaches are usually migraine-like in nature. These are related to constriction and rebound dilation of blood vessels in the brain causing fluid exudation and cerebral edema.
Treatment
It is always necessary to search out the cause of the headache with specific treatment directed at removing the cause.
