Explanation
This is a metabolic disease presenting with acute inflammatory arthritis of the peripheral joints most often beginning in the big toe, bones of the feet or knee, but often spreading to other joints of the body. It often becomes chronic, producing deformity and affecting mostly mature males.
Considerations
This is a build-up of excessive uric acid in the blood with deposition of sodium in and around joints and tendons. It occurs as a result of a failure of the body to convert uric acid into urea and ammonia, which are excreted in the urine. Since uric acid is an acidic protein waste product, this condition leads to a metabolic acidosis.
Treatment
Raw leafy vegetables, raw vegetable juices, beans and potatoes in particular, are high in potassium which is a protection against gout. Wheat products should be eliminated from the diet during acute attacks. Vitamin E is also needed. Sodium must be eliminated from the diet. Cherries, fresh or canned, whole or juice, have a beneficial effect on gout patients. Both fruit and vegetable juices, particularly orange juice, help keep uric acid crystals in solution and aid in their excretion from the body.
