Explanation
Diarrhea can be defined as either the frequent and repeated passage of unformed, watery stools or just frequent stools. Primarily the result of increased peristalsis, diarrhea is a frequent symptom of gastrointestinal disturbances including G.I. infections.
Considerations
Diarrhea may be the symptom of many GI disorders and can be either acute or chronic. The acute form may be part of a malabsorption syndrome or regional enteritis. Irritable bowel syndrome may be responsible for chronic diarrhea alternating with constipation.
Treatment
The underlying systemic disease should be considered and treated. Excessive use of laxatives must be discontinued and the establishment of a nutritional program of natural foods started. Supplemental therapy must be directed to the underlying problem and not just the effects.
