Explanation
This is an acute or chronic inflammation of a bursa, a serous-filled sac located at points of friction, usually by joints, for cushioning. It may be caused by trauma, acute or chronic infection, gout or arthritis, and certain systemic diseases as syphilis and tuberculosis.
Considerations
It is characterized by pain, swelling, tenderness, and limitation of motion over the affected joint with effusion into the bursal sac. The effusion is usually serous but may be hemorrhagic. The effusion is absorbed by the endothelium and recovery is usually seen in from one to two weeks. However, the condition may become chronic.

Relief of pain and restoration of motion is the primary objective in treating this condition. Rest and heat with gentle massage and passive motion are helpful in relieving pain and promoting healing.
