Explanation
This condition is characterized by inflammatory changes in the peripheral arteries, veins, and nerves with associated venous and arterial thrombosis frequently leading to gangrene of the extremities, especially the toes and feet.
Considerations
Smoking appears to be the prime factor in the etiology of this condition, although the cause is presumed to be unknown. Onset may be gradual or sudden with coldness, numbness, tingling or burning and often excruciating pain. Extremities show trophic changes, especially of the nails and skin. Diminution or absence of arterial pulsation is noted.
Treatment
It is absolutely imperative that the patient stop smoking completely for there will be no healing unless this is accomplished – no matter what therapy is used. Malnutrition is almost always noted. Adequate diet is essential.
