Explanations

A syndrome due to myocardial oxygen deficit, characterized by prolonged substernal, thoracic pain or discomfort which is precipitated chiefly by emotion, exercise, or the ingestion of a heavy meal. It is caused by a temporary inability of the coronary arteries to supply sufficient blood to the heart muscle.

Considerations

The coronary arteries can be sclerosed or in spasm. Or there may be low aortic pressure. The pain usually lasts about 30 seconds and is relieved by rest and medication. Diagnosis is made upon location looking for intensity and duration of pain, relation to exercise, and relief upon the administration of nitroglycerin. Angina is many times accompanied by a drop in blood sugar.
