Explanation
A systemic toxic condition clinically associated with renal insufficiency causing retention in the blood of nitrogenous waste substances normally excreted by the kidney.
Considerations
Uremia is a syndrome produced by all forms of kidney disease which may lead to renal insufficiency. The kidney’s ability to form ammonia is decreased, resulting in reduction of ionized calcium and retention of sulfates and phosphates in the blood, causing acidosis.
Treatment
Controversy over protein intake in these cases has long existed but unless actual uremic poisoning threatens, protein in the diet should be unusually high. Salt restriction is advised but adequate potassium intake will prevent salt damage to the kidneys. Fluid intake need not be restricted if edema or dropsy is absent. Protein, salt and fluid intake must be determined by the doctor in each case. Calories should be kept high to maintain energy levels.
