Explanation
Lack of a period is considered primary when periods do not begin until beyond eighteen years of age; and secondary when periods stop in women who have previously had periods. Mechanical obstruction in the vaginal or cervical canal, infection or trauma, ovarian dysfunction, endocrine dysfunction, emotional stress, extreme physical exercise, severe illness or obesity may produce a lack of periods.
Considerations
The appearance of the individual is an extremely helpful guide to clinical diagnosis in a patient with primary amenorrhea because of the absence of secondary sex characteristics. When there is normal female development, a total evaluation of the patient’s lifestyle, particularly in relation to nutrition, is mandatory. Faulty nutrition is often responsible for the lack of sexual development in young girls before puberty such that secondary sex characteristics fail to develop properly, or not at all.
Treatment
Correction of any mechanical obstruction and treatment of obesity and illness must be considered along with proper diet, relief from stress and adequate Nutritional Therapy.
