Explanation
Biliary tract disease causes at least 50 percent of pancreatitis cases. Symptoms include edema, hemorrhage and necrosis. The hemorrhagic form is considerably more serious. As the condition progresses, peritonitis ensues resulting in an acute abdominal emergency.
Considerations
The activated enzymes may diffuse from the pancreas causing damage to adjacent tissues such as the peritoneum, mesentery, spleen, kidney and even the pleura of the lung. Bacteria may be present, and these can produce abscesses.
Treatment
Treatment must be directed toward the cause of the condition. Because acute pancreatitis is caused by activation of enzymes while inside the pancreas (normally they remain inactive until they arrive at the small bowel), suppression of the enzymes is the first order of therapy.
