Explanation
An inflammatory process usually caused by staphylococci involving either the connective tissue or the glandular tissue of the breast or both. A nipple fissure may be present. The breast may harden, swell and become red, feverish and painful. Pus and fatigue may appear in advanced cases.
Considerations
Milk for the new baby is produced by the glandular tissue of the breast. During pregnancy the mammary gland (breast) is stimulated to increase in size in preparation for milk production by progesterone, a hormone produced in the ovaries. Any involvement of the breast, therefore, is closely associated with the functioning of the ovaries.
Treatment
As mastitis is rarely ever seen other than during the nursing period, the welfare of both the baby and mother must be considered. At any rate, the sucking mechanism acts through the CNS to promote proper uterine involution following parturition. Thus, treatment must be aimed at not only reducing the inflammation, but in supporting the entire female endocrine system, especially the ovarian function and uterine involution.
