Explanation
Urinary stones occurring in any part of the urinary tract are abnormal and usually composed of mineral salts such as mixtures of calcium oxalate, calcium phosphate and magnesium ammonium phosphate. They vary in size from microscopic to several centimeters in diameter.
Considerations
Uric acid stones may occur in gout, leukemia or polycythemia vera. Uric acid and calcium oxalate stones usually occur in the presence of acidic urine with pH 5.5 or less while calcium phosphate stones are associated with alkaline urine with pH of 6.8 or better. Normal urine pH should be about 6.5.
Treatment
The few stones of uric acid composition may be prevented or reduced and dissolved by giving the patient large amounts of fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits and juices to produce alkaline urine which tends to keep these crystals in solution.
