Explanations
Great force, often producing degenerative change, is frequently imposed upon intervertebral discs. Disc material may extrude when surrounding ligaments are injured or weakened. If this occurs suddenly, we have “acute low back syndrome.” If it occurs slowly, the symptoms are those of “chronic low back.”
Considerations
Such factors as weight, location and duration of the lesion may modify manifestations of either acute or chronic syndrome. The amount of force suddenly or slowly intensifying contributes to the severity of the lesion. Nutritional deficiencies, especially protein deficiencies, Vitamin C, calcium and Vitamin E deficiencies are the main predisposing factors.
Treatment
A diet particularly high in protein is essential in these cases. Organic, fresh, fertile eggs and essential amino acids, especially methionine, should be part of the daily menu. Extensive surgery has been avoided in many cases when 1,000 mgs of calcium, vitamin C and 400-800 units of vitamin E have been given daily with the high protein diet.
