Explanation
Infectious Mononucleosis is an acute infectious disease caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). In the past EBV probably took place primarily in young adults and in children, only rarely does it cause significant illness. In adolescence and adulthood EBV infection is usually expressed as Mononucleosis. Recently it has been associated with the term Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, affecting a large range of our population and age groups.
Considerations
The symptoms may mimic those of many other infectious diseases including hepatitis, rubella and toxoplasmosis. It may produce symptoms such as headache, malaise and fatigue, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, temperature fluctuations, jaundice, maculopapular rash, enlargement of the spleen or liver, stomatitis, and pharyngitis may also develop.
Treatment
An absolute must: all concentrated carbohydrates such as refined sugars etc., must be eliminated from the diet until condition improves. Diet should be light with high fluid intake. Encourage patients to drink cool shakes made with a high quality, pre-digested protein powder with Lactobacillus Acidophilus and Bifidobacterium added to restore friendly gut flora and to help the already compromised digestive system. Red meats and fried foods should be avoided.
