Explanation

This is a localized or diffuse inflammation of the bronchial tree. It may be acute or chronic and is caused by infections or by chemical or physical agents.

Considerations

In the acute form, there is an infection causing an acute inflammation of the entire respiratory system. Acute systemic symptoms are present. The condition is usually self-limiting and there is eventual complete healing and return of function. In the chronic form, there is progressive degeneration of tissue with thickening of the bronchial mucosa with a developing inelasticity. Hypertrophy and hypersecretion of mucus are characteristic.

Treatment

Alleviation of the irritating cough should be the first consideration. In the acute form, it is a productive cough as mucus is expelled, but in the chronic form it is usually a dry, wracking cough and the paroxysms are severe and debilitating. Malnutrition is almost always a concomitant feature of the chronic form, and nutritional deficiencies are usually noted in the acute form of bronchitis.
